PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

February 26, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson has announced that the PC version of Minecraft now has over 100 million registered users. That number represents the number of people who have created free Minecraft accounts - a required step in downloading the Minecraft demo from the official Mojang site.

Persson also said that that the PC version of the game has achieved a "14.3% conversion rate to paid accounts", which comes out to about 14.3 million of those registered users going on to purchase the full game. At the end of December Mojang announced that the game had sold 13 million copies, and said that 14 million copies had been sold by February 3. The PC version of the game became available in November 2011.

Recently the company announced 10 million copies of the Xbox 360 version and one million copies of the PlayStation 3 version had been sold.

Mojang is working on Xbox One, PS4, and PS Vita versions of Minecraft to be released later this year.

How much does MineCraft cost? $10 or $20 dollars, I forget exactly.

14 million times $10 is 140 million. Not counting merchandising, Xbox, PS3/4, and their future games which will do well because of the cult following Mojang now has.

An indy studio is well on its way to making 1 Billion dollars. *pinky to corner of mouth*

I may be crazy, but I am not insane.

Re: PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

I think Notch said a year or so ago that they no longer consider Mojang to be a Indie studio.

Re: PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

The alpha sale included a mod api implementation promise by release time. Now, they don't even answer any question relating to it. Anyone in the vast modding community is still angry at that, yet they ignore us. That is disgusting practice and I still think Mojang should be held accountable for this.

Re: PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

Given how complete FML has gotten, I am skeptical that the moding community is all that angry at this point.  I would not be surprised if they dropped adding support simply because the OSS community has done it so well.

As for 'disgusting' and 'held accountable'?  Mojang has been pretty supportive of moding including mentioning it specifically in their lisence agreement.   Whining that they are not going far enough by implementing something they originally scheduled and never got around to is pretty childish.

Re: PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

Oh really? Except each release, we have to disassemble compiled java, have to identify what every new feature is, fix the same bugs they fixed in Minecraft if it touches the function calls/returns, which in turn affect *any* mod that is reliant on those function signatures. It also means a mod community that lives 6 months after the official release.

Furthermore, after Mojang stole a couple of mods and implemented them themselves (although often partially or improperly), they never gave kudos to the original creators, even at some point saying that they themselves built on Minecraft, meaning they couldn't say it was their original content.

So take your judgmental attitude and stuff it. You didn't pay for that feature/no longer care for it? Great. Now just don't think you speak for those that did and are still waiting for it.

They've also integrated a few mods into the vanilla game, like the horses from Mo' Creatures.

Re: PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

I am really curious what happened there, it seems like a rather odd omission given all the platforms they support at this point and the significant amounts of cash they have.  It should not even be a scheduling issue since they outsource platform development.

Re: PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

Have Notch or Jeb ruled it out completely? (haven't really kept up on Mojang news). If not maybe some tweets from the community would get them to at least consider it.

Re: PC Version of Minecraft Has 100 Million Registered Users

No but at this point it's probably too late and not worth anyone's time.
