According to what Mojang co-founder and Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson said on Twitter last night, a film based on his cult hit open world building game is in the works. What that film might be about is unknown, but Persson claims that the film rights are with Warner Bros. Persson made the disclosure last night because the story was going to be leaked anyway by someone else:
"Someone is trying leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie," Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson tweeted last night. "I wanted to be the leak!" The developer later confirmed to several outlets that the tweet was no joke and that the Minecraft film project is in development at Warner Bros.
Another report on Deadline claims that the film will be a live action adaption of the game handled by Roy Lee, who most recently served as the producer on the hit Lego Movie. The report cites "sources inside the studio."
We'll have more on this story as it develops.
