Mojang Confirms That a Minecraft Film is in the Works

February 28, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

According to what Mojang co-founder and Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson said on Twitter last night, a film based on his cult hit open world building game is in the works. What that film might be about is unknown, but Persson claims that the film rights are with Warner Bros. Persson made the disclosure last night because the story was going to be leaked anyway by someone else:

"Someone is trying leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie," Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson tweeted last night. "I wanted to be the leak!" The developer later confirmed to several outlets that the tweet was no joke and that the Minecraft film project is in development at Warner Bros.

Another report on Deadline claims that the film will be a live action adaption of the game handled by Roy Lee, who most recently served as the producer on the hit Lego Movie. The report cites "sources inside the studio."

We'll have more on this story as it develops.

Unless Button and Sweetie are involved (or at least Claire Corlett gets a voice role) I'll pass.

Re: Mojang Confirms That a Minecraft Film is in the Works

I wonder if the movie will be created within the actual Minecraft game client or if they are going to over pay some animation studio to recreate Minecraft's blocky graphics for the big screen.

Considering it'd probably be a lot cheaper (time is money after all) to do it outside of the game client...

Hmm... Well there are two options they could do that would make it enjoyable

1. Take the story tid bit from when you exit The End after beating the Enderdragon and expand it.

or

2. Take a Tron-esque/Sword Art Online route and have players being thrown into the world of the game, and then they have to survive the game, and the only way to leave is to beat The Enderdragon.

"The Lego Movie" was good, have faith in Mojang.

Live Action? That does not sound like a good idea. No, no, wait. "The Lego Movie" was good, have faith in Mojang.

I may be crazy, but I am not insane.

Re: Mojang Confirms That a Minecraft Film is in the Works

I am curious to see what they do with this.  While yeah, minecraft does not have much of a plot, there is quite a bit of narrative embedded in both the mechanics and the community.

As who knows how many machima people have shown, there is a lot of room within the game for exploring 'what is going on?'  I could easily see a scaled up version of An Egg's Guide to Minecraft, Dig Build Live, or even The Newblie Advantures.  If they do not screw it up (not holding my breath) WB has a lot of room for doing something interesting.

All I have to ask is...HOW?!  Minecraft doesn't have a plot at all!  And this is coming from an Alpha Backer of Minecraft

Re: Mojang Confirms That a Minecraft Film is in the Works

Well, there IS technically some form of plot. Ever beat the Enderdragon and read the story tidbit from that?

They made a Battleship movie didn't they? I am sure they can shoehorn a plot into Minecraft.
