Veteran Halo and Destiny Music Composer Terminated

April 16, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

Veteran Halo and Destiny music composer Martin O'Donnell has been terminated from Bungie by the studio's board of directors, he announced today via Twitter.

O'Donnell has worked on every Halo title up until Halo Reach, and composed music trailers promoting Bungie's upcoming next-generation shooter Destiny. The composer announced his termination on Twitter earlier today, noting that (in his opinion) that it was "without cause."

Bungie later claimed in a short statement that O'Donnell parted ways with the studio on good terms.

"For more than a decade, Marty O'Donnell filled our worlds with unforgettable sounds and soundtracks, and left an indelible mark on our fans," the company said.

"Today, as friends, we say goodbye. We know that wherever his journey takes him, he will always have a bright and hopeful future. We wish him luck in all his future endeavors."

Details on whether this split was really amicable remains to be seen. O'Donnell's comment that the termination was "without cause" would be a good indicator that this parting of ways was anything but amicable.

I'm not aware of Bungie's BoD is operational or governance but if they had to get involved in an HR and hiring matter there was most likely a lot more afoot here than I'm betting Bungie would like everyone to believe.
