A Homosass, Florida man has been arrested for murdering his 16-month-old son early Thursday morning. Citrus County police arrested 24-year-old Cody Wygant and charged him with third degree murder and willful child neglect.
At around 8:20 a.m. on April 17 paramedics arrived at the suspect's home to find his 16-month old son Daymeon not breathing. The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital later that morning.
Citrus County Sherriff's Department detectives say that Wygant confessed to suffocating the baby because he would not stop crying while he was trying to play games on his Xbox. He allegedly told police that he used his hand to cover the infant's mouth and nose for "three to four minutes." He then placed the baby in a playpen under several layers of bedding, and went back to playing video games and watching TV, the sheriff's office said.
"It is inconceivable that a father could kill his infant son — it just baffles the mind," Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said in a media release. "Our only sense of relief now comes from knowing that we did exactly what we needed to do to bring justice to him swiftly. Our prayers go out to those who knew and loved Daymeon."
Detectives say when the father checked on the boy later, the toddler was "blue, not breathing and unresponsive." The child had been in the playpen for five hours before Wygant checked on him.
Wygant told detectives he was the child's primary caregiver, and he was the only person at home with the child between approximately 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. He also told police that he recently moved to Florida from California. The sheriff's office said Wygant's only connection to the area is the child's mother.
Wygant has an extensive criminal record in California with crimes ranging from trespassing to rape, the sheriff's office said.
