Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 developer From Software has been acquired by Japanese publisher Kadokawa, according to Siliconera. According to the report, Kadokawa will acquire 80 percent of From Software stock in a deal to be finalized on May 21. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Before the Dark Souls series became a household name in Japan, North America, and Europe, From Software was best known for developing the hit mech combat console game Armored Core and the long-running ninja game Tenchu.
The Kadokawa group publishes games, films, books, and magazines. The company's most recently published game was Suda51's Lollipop Chainsaw. It also developed and published PS3, PS4 and Vita strategy game Natural Doctrine.
From Software boss Naotoshi Zin says that the deal will further enhance both company's game development activities going forward.
"With a new system, from this point on, I believe we'll be able to make newer and more in depth games," he said.
