Electronic Arts is shutting down Ultima Forever, the multiplayer role-playing game for iOS devices. EA made the announcement on the official Ultima Forever forums. The game was billed as a spiritual successor to Ultima IV, but being a mobile title EA added micro-transactions into the mix. The online services will shut down on August 29.
"This was a very difficult decision for us to make," reads the post. "We've seen the game through ups and downs, and hope that you've enjoyed playing it every bit as much as we had making it! Through it all, it's been players like you who've made it all worthwhile."
While the game is still running players may be happy to hear that rewards are being boosted, equipment degradation has been turned off, the Gold key drop rate has been increased, and the in-game store will no longer sell premium currency.
The shut down isn't that shocking considering the EA closed the studio that made it – Mythic – back in May. At that time, it also shut down its other Ultima game, Lord of Ultima.
The only property EA is still operating that bears the Ultima name is the long-running MMORPG, Ultima Online.
