PlayStation, Xbox, and ESL Twitch Accounts Compromised

August 15, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

Twitch profiles for the official PlayStation, Xbox, and eSports League (ESL) channels were compromised or hacked by an unknown third-party yesterday, according to this Polygon report. That unknown person or persons altered highlights in all the channels with various messages - some of which were racist and homophobic.

Some of the messages took shots at Microsoft's Xbox One exclusivity deal for Rise of the Tomb Raider (like "Sorry guys but they rose the money bags," and "sorry bout tomb raider bb"), and others made fake game announcements for Fallout and Gears of War. But the worst, according to Polygon (who either did not share or have knowledge of the actual messages), contained racist and homophobic slurs.

A representative from Twitch told the publication that it suspects these accounts were compromised at Gamescom by someone who gained access to logged-in computers at the venue.

"We're deleting the offensive VODs as soon as we find them and are alerting individual teams at the venue," a Twitch rep said in an email.

The Xbox and PlayStation accounts seemed to have taken the biggest hit from this, with neither channel currently showing any archived videos.

"As a precautionary measure, we temporarily removed highlights and past broadcasts for those channels since it's in the early hours of the morning in Cologne," a Twitch representative tells Polygon.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is part of the backlash against Twitch after their heavy handed tactics that have been dropping on users lately. The fact is it happening to some of the game companies may just be a bonus for these people for other issues they don't like.  Still, no need for the hateful speech they have peppered throughout.
