Sony Shutting Down PlayStation Home in Japan Next Year

Last year at about this time Sony decided to stop releasing new content for PlayStation Home in Japan. Now the company says that it will lay the virtual environment to rest in March of 2015. A translation of the message (as detailed by Joystiq) goes on to note that the PlayStation Home services maintained by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Sony Computer Entertainment America will be exempt from this eventual shutdown.

Sony first launched its virtual 3D MMO-like environment for the PlayStation 3 in August of 2008 in Japan.

Why the North American and European versions of Home have managed to stay open is unknown, but one has to assume that Sony will eventually kill the service in all regions sometime shortly after it gives it the heave-ho Viking funeral in Japan…

Perhaps we as a community should suggest or even petition a unified Home or at least allow people to travel between Regions. Sometimes we would get a couple of people from Japan who snuck into the US HOME.

I surely would not mind welcoming in Japanese Home users….. though I'd hope the whole 'family' craze does not hit them as it has on our shores.

Actually I do remember Excite, I used it in middle school.

But yeah, hopefully in those other regions it remains open as, like I said, it's always busy and I see people spending money on it.

Yeah Home has an amazing following outside of Japan I’m hoping they release it on the PS4.

Some sites that fail here or don’t do as well here are insanely popular over in Japan. If your old like me you’ll remember the excite search engine which hasn’t changed much since 1999 lol but in Japan it’s one of the countries favorite sites.
