Survey: Brand Loyalty Not A Factor in Current Console Cycle

August 26, 2014 - GamePolitics Staff

A new report from Re/code featuring data from a recent Nielsen study seems to indicate that console brand loyalty isn't all it's cracked up to be...

According to the Nielsen study, 31 percent of PlayStation 4 owners already owned an Xbox 360 or Wii, but not a PlayStation 3. Around 17 percent didn't have any of the last generation consoles.

The study data was gathered from 1,200 American gamers ages seven to 54 during February to April, 2014. Nielsen did not include data on the makeup of male and female gamers that took part in the survey.

One of the other flaws in the study is that it only asked what participants "currently own" and not what systems they might have owned in the past. In other words it only shows a lack of brand loyalty from the last console generation to the new one, and does not necessarily represent a respondent's long-term loyalty to a console brand family.

Re: Survey: Brand Loyalty Not A Factor in Current Console Cycle

I'm PC and Nintendo Loyal. The last Sony console I had was the PS2, and I never had an XBox.

On the reasons why I never got a PS3, or PSP, and might end up being the case with the PS4. It primarily boils down to games. The games that I would actually play on those systems got released very far between them, or they just didn't get that many.

And example would be the PSP, wanted to get it for Valkyrie Chronicles.. but then there wasn't really that many other games I wanted to get on the system. Further down the line another game came out (don't recall), but again, there still wasn't much of a selection for my tastes. And this repeated a few more times, Dissidia came out, finally there were a good number of titles I wanted... Buuuut, then a number of titles I wanted prior, including VC, were out of print, which then made the number of games I wanted on that system smaller than I had realized.

XBox... I can only really think of one title I wanted on that platform off the top of my head, Shadow Complex. There might of been others, but I can't seem to think of any at the moment.

On the flip side, for Nintendo, you basically know what's coming, even if they don't announce it. A new Smash, a new high profile Mario, a new Zelda or two, hopefully a Metroid game, Pikmin, new IP, and so on. And that's why I am quite loyal to Nintendo, you can count on them coming out with good titles. It may take them a while, but they do it.

As for PC... I MIGHT of sold part of my soul to Valve during a summer or holiday sale. D:

Considering how failure prone last gen consoles are/were, asking them about owned in the past has a large impact on last console gen as well.
