Engadget has an extensive report on Samsung's freshly announced Gear VR, a virtual reality headset device that combines software created by Oculus VR with Samsung's new Galaxy Note 4 phone. Yes, this is a real thing.
Announced at the IFA 2014 event today in Berlin, Germany, the Gear VR is a headset that allows Samsung's Note 4 to be slipped into a headset, much like the Oculus Rift. The device can then be used for virtual reality related applications. While details on the software are pretty thin at this point, all of it is being created by Oculus VR.
Engadget offers a detailed report on just how functional the device is at this point, but the key take-away is that Samsung plans on releasing the device this year – far ahead of Oculus VR's own VR technology.
