Report: DOJ likely to oppose Comcast-TWC Merger

Bloomberg is reporting that that the Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger will likely be blocked by the Justice Department. The $45.2 billion merger is likely to be opposed because DOJ lawyers believe it will harm consumers. The Federal Communications Commission, who also have the power to reject the deal, are also leaning towards the same conclusion, according to the report.

It's official: Phil Harrison is no longer with Microsoft

In March rumors circulated that Corporate Vice President in Xbox in Europe Phil Harrison had left Microsoft. Today Head of Xbox Phil Spencer confirmed with GamesIndustry.biz in a statement that Harrison was no longer with Microsoft.

"Following a successful tenure as Corporate Vice President in Xbox in Europe, Phil Harrison has chosen to pursue business interests outside of Microsoft," Spencer's statement reads.

Modders turn 3DS into PC remote desktop

Modders have turned a 3DS into a PC remote desktop using some homebrew software on the device (and Windows 95, apparently). A post on gbatemp (a forum about modding and homebrew) describes how it all works, though the poster admits the mod is "rudimentary" at this point in time. A video (which you can watch to your left) shows the hand-held being used to remotely control a character in World of Warcraft. The game's performance isn't very good on the 3DS.

Malwarebytes: scammers using Steam's artwork gallery to trick users

Security research firm and antivirus software maker Malwarebytes has identified a new scam tied to Steam's artwork service.

These con artists upload publicly viewable images via Steam's artwork service and give them descriptions and external links that lead to fake online video streaming services like OfficialStreamTV or to a second launch pad on one of the several free blogging platforms.

From Software working on weapon durability bug in 'Dark Souls II'

It looks like From Software will finally deal with a long standing bug in the Dark Souls II that ties framerate to weapon degradation speeds, according to Kotaku. When you use a weapon in Dark Souls II it degrades until it breaks, which is a real pain in the ass by anyone's definition of what a "real pain in the ass" is because it has been plaguing players for a very long time (if you are using a framerate of 60 frames-per-second then your weapon will degrade a lot faster). Yesterday Pakistan-based programmer Ammar Askar revealed a very serious security flaw in the Minecraft server software that makes it very easy for anyone to crash a server hosting the game. Developer Mojang responded in kind by releasing an update to the game that deals with the issue.

Epic hands out cash to six more projects through its Unreal Dev Grants program

Epic Games has announced the game projects that will get a small chunk of its $5 million Unreal Dev Grants program to promote projects that use its Unreal engine 4 technology. Today Epic gave Arran Langmead a $14,000 grant for a kart racing Steam and PS4 game called Bears Can't Drift; $7,000 to Aaron Shea for BLUI, a free Chromium plugin for UE4 that enables UI elements to be created in Web objects and served to UE4; and $16,000 to Untold Games for its VR project, Loading Human.

Net Neutrality-themed game '404Sight' released

404Sight, an Unreal Engine 4 game about net neutrality, is now available on Steam. The game was developed by Retro Yeti Games, who received a $13,000 grant from Epic Games as part of its Unreal Dev Grant program in late March.

The development team is made up of University of Utah students who decided to create an endless runner game that makes a statement about net neutrality.

Video game sales fall six percent in March

April 17, 2015

Console sales fell an estimated 21 percent in March, according to new data from retail research firm NPD Group. Overall video game sales were down around six percent to $963.7 million in March, while consoles sales fell 21 percent to $311.1 million, and software fell 3 percent to $395.4 million. The video game accessories category was the only bright spot for March, rising 15 percent to $257.2 million.

Congress inches towards passing fast tracking measures for trade agreements

Bloomberg reports that lawmakers are close to hashing out a deal on a "Fast Track" bill or "Trade Promotion Authority" that would make approving trade agreements a more streamlined process. Opponents of the measure like the Electronic Frontier Foundation say that what lawmakers are seeking with this proposal essentially takes away its oversight powers related to trade agreements.
