Pirate Bay Co-Founder Found Guilty of Hacking

Pirate Bay co-founder Gottfrid Warg has been found guilty of hacking into computers and illegally downloading files in Denmark by a Danish court. The Danish court ruled that Warg and his co-defendant are guilty of breaking into computers owned by technology services giant CSC in February 2012. After gaining access to servers, the pair downloaded police and social security files, according to the BBC. Warg could face up to six years in jail when he is sentenced tomorrow.

His accomplice walked away free from the court because he had served 17 months in pre-trial detention.

'DriveClub' for PS Plus Users 'On Hold'

Things are not getting better for Sony when it comes to its online-focused racing game, DriveClub for PS4. Sony's PlayStation Network problems have gotten a bit worse due to the release of the 2.0 update for PlayStation 4, which enabled Share Play and YouTube video uploads. These new connectivity issues have in turn caused even more problems for DriveClub; so much so that Sony has shelved the free PlayStation Plus version of the game. Connectivity issues, which Sony says it is well aware of, have been plaguing the network since the update was released.

Ubisoft: Nine Million Copies of 'Watch Dogs' Shipped

Ubisoft announced today that it has shipped (or "sold in") more than nine million copies of its hacking-themed action game Watch Dog since it launched. The news was part of the French publisher's latest financial report. Two-thirds of total Watch Dogs sales (to retailers) came from the Xbox One, PS4, and PC versions, according to the company.

It's DRM Exemption Petition Season At The Copyright Office

It's that time again at the U.S. Copyright Office: every three years the agency in charge of all things copyright-related accepts petitions on activities that should be exempt under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). 2014 is one of those years, but the deadline is Monday, November 3.

Sherwin Siy, VP of legal affairs at Public Knowledge tells Ars Technica that it's not too difficult to submit a petition, but recommends petitioners keep it under five or six pages long and be specific on what the exemption request will accomplish that serves the greater good.

'Creepy Murderer on GTA V' Video is Pretty Creepy

This is mildly funny in a creepy sort of way, but it works very well for Halloween. YouTuber MrKreepyKoala decided to dress up like a serial killer and silently hunt and kill Grand Theft auto Online players. Here's the description of a short video he created called "Creepy Murderer on GTA V!"

"In this video I went into lobbies on GTA around 3 AM and started playing creepy lullaby's sung by women and children. I then went into passive mode with my radar turned off so they thought I was invincible and unaware of me being in passive mode!"

Researchers Use Custom Video Game To Measure Spatial Memory in Sleep Apnea Patients

New research led by NYU Langone Medical Center sleep specialists using video games finds that sleep apnea may affect memory of everyday events like where you parked your car or where you left the TV remote. Spatial memory is utilized for everyday tasks, such as remembering how to get home, or where you left an item in your house. This type of memory is affected by Alzheimer disease.

'Papers, Please' Wins GameCity Prize

Nottingham, England-based video game festival GameCity has awarded Papers, Please with the fourth annual GameCity Prize, an award that "celebrates videogames as a cultural art form." Walmart To Start Selling Used Games Nov. 2

October 30, 2014

Retailer Walmart will start selling used video games, consoles and accessories on November 3, the company announced this week. In March the company announced that it would start allowing customers to sell videogames for store credit or cash. Obviously the company had plans to resell all these games, systems and accessories it was buying, but didn't announce a definitive date for it until now. The trade-in games were refurbished and labeled as 'Certified Pre-owned' by Walmart for sale in stores and on its website at relatively lower prices.

Take-Two Sells 34 Million Copies of 'GTA V'

October 29, 2014

As part of his company's Q2 FY2015 earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed that Grand Theft Auto V has sold 34 million copies worldwide since its launch late last year. Those figures represent sales on the Xbox 360 and PS3 since late last year. Zelnick went on to say that these numbers are good because the company has not reached full saturation in all markets. The game is set for launch on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

'Crusader: No Remorse' is 'On The House' in November

Electronic Arts announced this morning that its "On The House" program will feature Origin's (the company founded by Richard Garriott, not the DRM'd digital distribution system of the same name) popular action role-playing game classic, Crusader: No Remorse. New York City Public Advocate Wants Conditions on Comcast-TWC Merger

In a letter (PDF) to the state Public Service Commission, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James and 21 other state and city officials asked that the approval of the Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger be contingent on the new company providing free Internet to the poor, along with a number of other demands - including a commitment to offer at least gigabit speeds to paying customers. Here's a list of what the major players in the theatrical superhero business have announced.  Yeah, there are a few "untitled this-or-that" movies that I've left off the list.  There's talk about a Gambit movie, a Deadpool movie, even a female-led spin-off of the Amazing Spider-Man films but they seem a little less solid than others.  Still, anything could happen!

Hungarian Citizens Protest Proposed Internet Tax

According to this BBC report, "tens of thousands" of Hungarian citizens have taken to the streets of Budapest to protest a proposed tax aimed at consumers who use the Internet. The BBC is calling it the "biggest anti-government demonstration" in years. Smaller rallies were held in other Hungarian cities as well.
