Gamasutra's Game Developer Salary Survey 2014 Highlights the Gender Gap in Video Games Industry

According to Gamasutra's Game Developer Salary Survey 2014, men working in the video games industry here in the United States made an average of $85,074 in 2013, while women in the same jobs made an average of $72,882. According to Gamasutra, women made 86 cents on every dollar that men made in the U.S. game industry.

While this is certainly an issue that needs to be addressed, the pay gap between men and women is less than the national average: in the U.S. overall, women make 77 cents on every dollar that men make, according figures from a 2012 Census Bureau survey.

Report: Wii U Purchasing Intent Climbs Following E3

Nintendo's performance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June boosted purchasing plans for Wii U by 50 percent, according to a new report. A survey carried out by IHS on behalf of the Gamer Network polled 1,000 "core" gamers about their purchasing intentions for various consoles and games before and after the annual trade show in Los Angeles.

Kickstarter Suspends 'Areal' Crowd-Funding Campaign

While we do not know specifically why it happened as of this writing, Kickstarter has apparently suspended the crowd-funding campaign for West Game's "spiritual successor" to STALKER. The Arreal Kickstarter page currently list the campaign as "suspended" even thought the project has been fully funded by the community.

Team Newbee Wins The International, Earns $5 Million

The final of the official Dota 2 International world championship took place yesterday, with Chinese team Newbee winning the $5 million prize pot. Newbee beat another team from China, ViCi Gaming in front of a capacity crowd at Seattle's Key Arena. As a team, Newbee took home $5 million, while runner-up team ViCi Gaming received $1.5 million. The third-place team, North America's Evil Geniuses, earned $1 million total.

'Yogventures' Developer to Dissolve

Winterkewl Games tells in this lengthy article that it will disband. Winterkewl was the developer behind the Yogscast-backed Kickstarter project Yogventures, which raised over a half a million dollars from over 13,000 backers. Last week Yogscast announced that the game had been effectively canceled but promised to give backers a copy of a similar game being developed by Nerd Kingdom called TUG, an open-world sandbox which it is now partnering with instead.

Riot Cracking Down on Unruly 'League of Legends' Players

Riot Games is cracking down on League of Legends players who think it is cool to use slurs and those who engage in "unsportsmanlike behavior" by handing out 14-day or permanent bans.

In a thread on Reddit, Riot's Jeffrey Lin provided some more clarity, and explained that manual reviews of complaints are present to ensure people are not unfairly banned.

Bungie Settles With Former Composer

GamesBeat reports that Marty O’Donnell, the composer for the hit shooter series Halo, has settled a lawsuit against Bungie chief executive Harold Ryan. A King County Superior Court judge in Seattle has approved a deal in which Ryan will pay O’Donnell more than $95,000 to settle legal claims related to a lawsuit that O’Donnell filed in May.

'PC Gaming Alliance' Renamed 'Open Gaming Alliance'

The PC Gaming Alliance has formally and officially changed its name to the "Open Gaming Alliance" (or OGA, for short). The group said that it changed its name in recognition of the changing dominance of platforms within the digital gaming market. The organization describes itself as "an open forum where companies can cooperate to develop and promote solutions that drive the PC gaming industry forward."

Gameloft's 'Modern Combat 5' Pirated By Contest Winner(s)

Gameloft held a contest to let winners have early access to an iOS, Windows 8, and Android shooter called Modern Combat 5, but the company claims that some individual(s) took advantage of that good will, cracked the game, and released it to various dark corners of the internet to be pirated.

To say that Modern Combat's development team is not pleased with the situation is probably an understatement...

Senate Majority Leader Pits One Internet Tax Against Another

A new Senate bill may force lawmakers to agree to expand the reach of sales taxes on out-of-state retailers, or see the end of a law that forbids states and cities from imposing a tax on internet access. As the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, this choice for lawmakers is due to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s handling of a bill called the Internet Tax Freedom Act.
