Survey: European game developers unsatisfied with government tax break offerings

According to a survey of developers in Europe - released by Gamasutra and conducted by the organizers of GDC Europe - most are unsatisfied with government tax subsidies. According to the data, only 12 percent of developers surveyed doing business in European countries find tax breaks available to them adequate. That's a one percent decrease from last year's survey results.

Club Nintendo, Nintendo's rewards program for its various hand-held and home consoles, has officially closed its doors. A visit to the official web site for the rewards program features an image of Mario with hat in hand and head bowed to signify the somber moment. It is accompanied by the following message from Nintendo:

"Club Nintendo has been discontinued. Our heartfelt thanks to our members for your support over the years. Please stay tuned for more information about our new loyalty program."

Getting 'Fallout 3' when you buy 'Fallout 4' deal is part of a pre-order

The "get Fallout 3 for free if you buy Fallout 4" deal for Xbox One owners announced by Bethesda during the Electronic Entertainment Expo last month actually his some important fine print: it's part of a pre-order deal. On its blog, Bethesda said:

"We're excited to announce - for a limited time - your pre-order of Fallout 4 for Xbox One will entitle you to receive Fallout 3 on Xbox 360," reads the official blurb.

Calif. anti-video game law author Leland Yee pleads guilty to racketeering in federal court

July 1, 2015

Former California state Senator Leland Yee pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering in federal court on Wednesday. In entering his plea, Yee admitted in court that he "knowingly and intentionally agreed with another person" to take part in an enterprise and commit at least two offenses that affected state commerce.

During his plea hearing U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer asked Yee if he was entering the plea of his own free will because he was guilty:

"Are you pleading guilty of your own free will because you are guilty?" Breyer asked him.

2015 Gamers in Real Life scholarship winners revealed

Daybreak Game Company LLC has announced the two winners of the 2015 Gamers in Real Life (G.I.R.L.) Scholarship. The recipients of this year's scholarships are Grace Kim of Aurora, Colo., and Cherylynn Lima of Brentwood, Calif. Now in its eighth year, the G.I.R.L Scholarship was expanded this year to honor students in two categories: Art & Design and Programming & Engineering. Daybreak Games established the scholarship program to encourage college students to pursue careers in the video game industry.

FISA Court gives the NSA another 180 days to spy on you

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ruled Monday that the NSA may temporarily resume its bulk data collection of Americans’ phone records. The ruling from the secretive court allows the NSA to flip the switch back to the "on" position, despite the provision of the USA Patriot Act expiring on June 1.

SumOfUs.org takes aim at TWC at shareholders meeting

Report: Canadian Security Intelligence Service website taken down by hacker(s)

SC Magazine reports that unknown hackers managed to temporarily shut down the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) website on Monday night using a DDoS attack. This is the second time in the last couple of weeks that hackers have managed to take the site offline. The attack(s) are being attributed to a lone hackers who were formerly associated with hacktivist group Anonymous, working on their own. Read more

Riot Games invests in 'Curse Voice'

League of Legends maker Riot Games (which is owned by China-based online gaming super power Tencent) has invested an undisclosed amount of money in online media and tech company Curse. The focus of the investment appears to be in Curse Voice, the company's   VOIP solution for gaming, but Curse is best known for its Gamepedia web portal, a Wikipedia-style repository of information on a number of popular games, and a number of portals dedicated to specific games run by fans. The site touts 28 million monthly visitors and over 1 billion page views.

MTG acquires controlling interest in ESL parent company

eSports league ESL has reached an agreement with MTG, to acquire a majority stake in Turtle Entertainment GmbH, the holding company for ESL and its international subsidiaries. ESL, one of the world’s largest eSports companies, operates a variety of high profile competitive gaming events such as the Intel Extreme Masters and ESL One. Under the terms of the acquisition agreement, MTG will acquire a majority of the outstanding shares of Turtle Entertainment for €78 million (roughly $86.4 million USD).

Report: Leland Yee may take a plea deal in federal corruption case

Former California state senator Leland Yee may be looking for a plea deal, according to several Bay Area reports this morning. According to the San Jose Mercury News, Yee and his attorney are scheduled to appear before San Francisco U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer sometime today for a change of plea hearing, which has been set on the judge's public calendar. The terms of this alleged plea agreement have not been made public.

EFF celebrates 25 years of digital rights advocacy July 16

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on July 16 at a party in San Francisco, the digital rights advocacy group announced today.

On July 16 it will also host what it is calling a "Minicon" in the first part of the day. The Minicon will offer discussions on the past, present and future of digital rights.
