Wargaming Providing Financial Support to Three Open Source Software Foundations

Free-to-play MMO developer and publisher Wargaming (World of Tanks, World of Warplanes, and World of Warships) has announced that it will provide financial support for three open-source foundations. The company says that it is doing this because it uses a number of open-source technologies in its games and it wants to help support those technologies grow and prosper.

Capcom UK Cancels Bloody Pool Event in Light of Woolwich Attack

Atari Seeks Permission to Hold Asset Auctions in July from Bankruptcy Court

Atari Inc., the US division of French parent company Atari S.A., has asked a U.S. bankruptcy court for permission to auction off its assets in July. The assets include the Atari logo, the Test Drive, Asteroids, Pong, Total Annihilation, and Rollercoaster Tycoon franchises.

Atari filed for bankruptcy in January and tried to solicit bids for its entire catalog, but the 15 offers it received were deemed unacceptable. Now the company hopes to divide its assets up and sell them separately in hopes of generating more cash to pay down its debtors.

Humble Bundle Weekly Sale Features Alan Wake Titles

The Humble Weekly Bundle is offering the Collector's Edition of Remedy's psychological action thriller Alan Wake and the follow-up title, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. Both games are only available on Windows via Steam unfortunately. The current average purchase price for the two games is a paltry $2.14. It is understandable why at that price over 83,300 bundles have already been sold. So far the bundle has raised over $178,000, with proceeds going to the game's developer, the Humble Bundle folks, and charities the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child's Play.

GameStop Assures Consumers that PS4 and Xbox One Games Can Be Resold

While Microsoft is being a little bit cagey about how it will handle used games on Xbox One, GameStop is trying to reassure consumers that next-generation games will be able to be bought and sold. Speaking to Forbes, GameStop president Tony Bartel explained why having the ability to buy and sell games is important as consoles transition.

College Player Wins Appeal in NCAA Football Game Lawsuit

The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals has reversed a lower court that dismissed the lawsuit of former Rutgers quarterback Ryan Hart's against EA Sports related to the NCAA franchise. Hart sued EA using his image in NCAA Football without his permission and without properly compensating him, he claims. Hart, who played for Rutgers from 2002-05 filed his suit in 2009 against EA.

Sony Considers Suggestion for Entertainment Division IPO

Bloomberg is reporting that, under pressure from its shareholders, Sony executives and board members have decided to discuss billionaire Daniel Loeb’s proposal for an initial public offering of its entertainment business. Indies Can't Self-Publish on Xbox One

Even as Microsoft revealed that it would ditch the Xbox Live Arcade designation for games in the new version of Xbox Live - likely to be launched with the release of Xbox One later this year, the company also revealed that it would not let indie game developers self-publish their games. This makes sense considering that it ditched support for its entire XNA program last year.

Diablo III: One Year Later

Get-Well Gamers Foundation Upset over Xbox One's 'Fee' on Pre-Owned Games

Ryan Sharpe from Get-Well Gamers Foundation posted a statement on Facebook condemning the way Microsoft plans to handle pre-owned titles. Sharpe says that this idea of a fee on used games is an alarming trend that bothers him so much the he has decided that he will not include Xbox One systems and games in the inventory of games for the 180 hospitals in its network.

EA CFO: EA Is Developing Wii U Games

Last week EA's Jeff Brown said that the company had "no games in development for the Wii U currently," but a statement from EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen noting that EA "is developing games for the Wii U," but not as many as the company is developing for Sony and Microsoft's consoles seems to contradict Brown's comments.

At issue is a report in Wired indicating that when software purchased on discs at retail or through the Xbox Live Marketplace is installed on a system it is associated with the purchaser's user account. Former NCAA Player Admits EA Sports Character Doesn't Look Like Him

USA Today reports that Former Connecticut guard Tate George has admitted in a deposition taken last year that avatars in several versions of a video game that are supposed to represent him do not resemble him at all and were used multiple times to represent other players in the game. George is one of several former NCAA players suing the NCAA and EA Sports for illegally using their likenesses. The group of players are trying to get certified as a class. Read more
