NCAA Appeals O'Bannon Lawsuit Decision

The NCAA appealed a federal judge's injunction in the case involving former UCLA basketball star Ed O'Bannon, which prohibiting it from enforcing rules against student-athletes being paid for the use of their names, images and likenesses. The appeal was filed in the 9th Circuit court late Wednesday, and was not a great surprise to anyone following the case - the NCAA announced its intention to appeal after Wilken's ruling was released on Aug. 8.

'Ascend: Hand of Kul' Pulled From Xbox Marketplace

Free-to-play Xbox 360 online game Ascend: Hand of Kul has been removed from the Xbox Marketplace by Microsoft, according to developer Signal Studios. Signal Studios said in a post on the company's web site that Microsoft removed the game over the weekend. Why it was taken offline is unknown as of this writing.

Report: Xbox One Will Soon Offer 24-Hour Game Trials

Who needs a demo when you can allow consumers to play a game for an extended amount of time and turn that experience into an actual purchase? According to this Reddit screen grab after the latest Xbox One system update, Microsoft is trying out 24-hour trials with a select few game titles.

Why 'Super Smash Bros.' Won't Be Released on Wii U and 3DS Simultaneously

If you were wondering why the releases of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U are staggered, the answer is the debugging process. According to series creator Masahiro Sakurai, who recently wrote about the games in his Famitsu Weekly column (as translated by Kotaku East), the debugging process for both games is very time consuming. Sakurai is currently debugging the 3DS version of the game, which is set to be released first.

EA Sports Season Ticket Ends in 2015

EA Sports announced on its web site that it will discontinue its Season Ticket digital subscription promotion in March of 2015. Launched in 2011, the Season Ticket offered early access to select EA Sports titles, Ultimate Team Packs and other DLC, and discounts on digital purchases for an annual fee of around $20.

'Counter Strike: Global Offensive' Tournament Viewership Break Records at ESL One Cologne

The ESL announced that the ESL One Cologne 2014 event saw peak online concurrent viewership of more than 409,368 during the Counter Strike: Global Offensive match in-game or online. In addition Twitch saw 343,638 peak concurrent viewers, beating a record set in March by 153 percent.

"It's amazing to see the growth of Counter Strike: Global Offensive in the eSports community. Just five months after ESL One Katowice, we see ESL One Cologne 2014 break our previous record by an amazing 161 per cent," said the ESL's Ulrich Schulze.

Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare Not Coming to Wii U

In a not-so-shocking turn of events today, developer Sledgehammer Games revealed that Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare will not be coming to the Wii U. According to a tweet from Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey, the decision not to release the game on Nintendo's console was not his or his company's, but Activision's.

"No, no WiiU," he said in response to a question about bringing the game to Wii U. "That was an Activision decision. We are focused on XboxOne, PS4, and PC."

Tax Credits Available for 'Culturally British' Video Games in the UK

Developers of video games that are deemed "culturally British" can claim tax relief on some of the production costs in the United Kingdom thanks to a new tax relief scheme that officially went into effect in the region yesterday.

Under the newly implemented plan, game developers and publishers can claim a tax credit of up to 25 percent on qualifying production costs associated with producing games that are certified by the BFI as culturally British.

Sucker Punch Hit With Layoffs

InFamous developer Sucker Punch has laid off an undetermined number of employees, according to what Sony Computer Entertainment America (the parent company of the studio), has told IGN UK.

SCEA would not give an exact number, but did confirm that there has been a "reduction in workforce." The company also did not disclose the reasoning behind the layoffs.
