Nintendo 3DS Firmware Update Kills Web Browser Exploit

March 3, 2015

The party is officially over for those who were using an exploit in the 3DS web browser to load unsigned code. Nintendo released a new firmware update today that eliminates a web browser exploit that allowed users to inject code within downloaded games. The exploit was being used by some to load and run pirated Game Boy Color ROMs, made it so that games could be played regardless of region-locking, and even allowed some to bypass actually paying for micro-transactions in Nintendo's first free-to-play puzzle game for 3DS, Pokémon Shuffle.

We all get that sex sells, but there's a reason that parties involving strippers and other male-focused titillation might be looked down upon in this day and age. After all it's no longer the 1990s and people expect party organizers to show some sensitivity to the growing number of women that attend game industry trade events like the Game Developers Conference.

In episode 8 of HBO's "Looking," the majority of the episode takes place during the LGBQT gaming event GaymerX3, and co-organizer Matt Conn (who is also the co-founder of MidBoss Games and a developer on the LGBQT-friendly cyber punk adventure game Read Only Memories) even gets a cameo.

Speaking to Conn (who is currently at GDC promoting his game) briefly via IM, I learned some of the lengths that producers went to to make this game-focused episode of the show as authentic as possible.

Epic Games Makes 'Unreal Engine 4' Free For Everyone

March 2, 2015

Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney has decided that it is time to make Unreal Engine more competitive with stiff competition from the likes of Unity and other free game development tools. Unity has been free for some time, and some believe that it is cutting into Unreal Engine's market share in the game development space (no, we do not have stats on whether or not this is true, but this is at least the perception in some circles - ed.).

Goth_SkunkAhh! I misinterpreted your statement about being left with almost every game in existence. I interpreted it as 'If you boycott games he's been involved with, you're boycotting almost all of them.'03/05/2015 - 9:31pm
Andrew EisenGoth - Card has been involved with only a small handful of games so if one were to boycott games for his involvement, they wouldn't be missing out on many games.03/05/2015 - 9:29pm
Goth_Skunk@Craig: Only if you're not interested in seeing it end.03/05/2015 - 9:27pm
Craig R.Instead of calling people the "anti gamergate faction", you could just call them "sane"03/05/2015 - 9:23pm
Goth_SkunkWhat do you mean 'almost every game in existence'? Card is a writer, not a game developer.03/05/2015 - 9:18pm
Andrew EisenBut I too wonder how many people who cry boycott actually follow through. I vaguely remember a few years ago a bunch of people boycotting one of the CoD games and were all found playing it on Steam.03/05/2015 - 7:53pm
Andrew EisenAn interesting quandary but not equivalent as boycotting games that Card was involved with leaves you with... well, almost every game in existence.03/05/2015 - 7:51pm
MechaTama31I agree that it's silly to avoid buying a game because one person involved with it said some things you disagree with. But I wonder how many of the people calling it silly this time have boycotted games for, say, Orson Scott Card's involvement?03/05/2015 - 7:40pm

Goth_SkunkThat's terrible. Now that it's been noted, can we return to Andrew's amazing steel-tearing teeth?03/05/2015 - 6:42pm
Andrew EisenWell, sucks that that happened and I'm glad he's alright (nothing in the article you linked says he's in critical condition) but there's no need for anyone to shut up.03/05/2015 - 6:41pm
