Rights Groups Urge President Obama to Veto CISA

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and 35 other rights groups and organizations, companies, and security experts have banded together to roundly denounce the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA).

The groups sent a letter on Monday asking U.S. president Barack Obama to veto S. 2588 of 2014. The group's letter says that this new reincarnation of the failed CISPA bill from last year fails to offer a comprehensive solution to cybersecurity threats and "contains inadequate protections for privacy and civil liberties."

Xbox One Sales Doubled in June Thanks to Kinect-Less Bundle

Microsoft announced that Xbox One sales in the US in June were twice as much as they were in May thanks to the retail release of the Kinect-less bundle.

"Since the new Xbox One offering launched on June 9, we've seen sales of Xbox One more than double in the US, compared to sales in May," said the firm in an announcement late Wednesday afternoon.

The figures are based on "internal data based on retail calendar and sold through numbers" from Microsoft.

Verizon Warns FCC About Reclassifying Broadband Providers as 'Common Carriers'

In a new filing with the FCC, Verizon claims that if broadband providers are classified as common carrier under Title II of the Communications Act, they will be forced to charge web services and web sites. It is quite a claim, and one that has been debunked by experts, but that isn't stopping Verizon from pushing the issue.

Support Ending for 'The Sims 2'

EA announced that it is ending support for The Sims 2. The 2004 sequel shipped nearly 20 million copies across all platforms, and released eight expansion packs. While it is shutting down support for the game, EA is offering those with a registered Origin account a free copy of the most-up-to-date version, of the game - The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection.

That will appear in Origin in the next few days before support ends on The Sims 2 July 22. The Ultimate Collection also includes all the expansions and stuff packs, and allows players to transfer their save files.

Report: Google Play Sees More Downloads in Q2, But iOS Earns More Money

A new report from App Annie suggests that Google Play is winning the app downloads race in the second quarter of 2014, but also points out that iOS is the still the platform that is securing the most revenue.

According to App Annie figures, in the latest quarter Apple's App Store made 80 percent more revenue than Google Play, but Google Play saw 60 percent more downloads. A lot of Google's growth was driven by consumers in Brazil, Thailand and India who helped to drive a 45 percent rise in downloads over the previous quarter.

Congresswoman Proposes Amendment to Stop FCC From Meddling With 'State Issues'

US Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has always been opposed to the FCC regulating anything, but she has been particularly outspoken about the FCC's Open Internet Order since it was introduced in 2010. To that point, Rep. Blackburn recently said that she wants to make sure the FCC never interferes with "states' rights" to protect private Internet service providers from having to compete against municipal broadband networks.

Game Developer: YouTube Personalities Need to Do More for Game Developers

In an article on Gamasutra, game developer and president of Game Mechanics John Ardussi claims that 150,000 views of a YouTube video featuring a game only generates about 10 game sales.

Ardussi did not detail how he came to this conclusion, and not all games have that kind of sales performance as it relates to YouTube exposure. In other words, mileage may vary.

But Ardussi still has doubts that YouTube exposure generally stimulates sales in any significant way.
