Rumor: Activision in Talks to Buy Take-Two

GamesIndustry International talks to two financial analysts who closely watch the video games industry sector about what they make of rumors that Activision could possibly acquire Take-Two. This rumor began circulating over the weekend after Mike Hickey, an equity researcher for the Benchmark Company, sent a note to investors on Friday claiming that the two companies were engaged in what he categorized an "emerging romance."

BuzzFeed Spending Some of Its $50 Million Funding on Casual Games

BuzzFeed will use some of the $50 million it secured last month to develop games. According to this TechCrunch report, BuzzFeed will use that investment to develop casual games - just one measure the company is working on to expand its audience.

BuzzFeed vice president of product Chris Johanesen tells TechCrunch that games are just one more part of an overall strategy to get visitors to do more than consume its content. In other words, it's a move towards more engagement.

What? NINTENDO 3DS is evolving!

Surprising everyone who didn't see it coming (obviously), Nintendo announced a brand spanking new model of the Nintendo 3DS called New Nintendo 3DS.

Great name, eh?  Check out the attached Nintendo Direct.  The New 3DS stuff starts at 14:20.  Of course, it's in Japanese but that never stops a true fan!

Another Round of Layoffs Hit Nintendo of Europe

Nintendo of Europe has confirmed with Kotaku that around 320 of its employees will be laid off this week. That number includes around 130 full-time Nintendo of Europe employees, along with 190 temporary workers at Nintendo of Europe's Germany-based localization department. All 320 people will be unemployed by August 31, according to Kotaku.

Oculus Rift Creator: VR Won't Be Mainstream for Another Five Years

Virtual reality won't become "mainstream" for another five years or more, according to what Oculus VR founder and Oculus Rift VR headset creator Palmer Luckey tells GamesIndustry International. Luckey says that that rather large window of time is fine with him because the Facebook acquisition gives him the space he and his company need to do what is best for VR technology in the long term.

NYT Report: Twitch Has More Primetime Viewers Than E!, MSNBC, and Other Cable Networks

According to a New York Times report (highlighted by Joystiq), Twitch draws more viewers than popular cable networks such as HLN, CNN, E!, MSNBC, TruTV and even MTV during peak hours. Twitch's viewer numbers have been on the uptick for two years, hitting an impressive milestone of about 800,000 viewers during peak (or in TV terms, "primetime") hours.

President Obama's Choice for 'Piracy Czar' is Cozy With Hollywood

This week the White House nominated an entertainment industry lawyer to be the new "piracy czar." The job's main function is to coordinate intellectual property enforcement efforts at various federal-level government agencies. The new czar will be Danny Marti, who replaces Victoria Espinel; she left last year to take the reins of lobbying group, The Software Alliance, or the BSA.

IGDA Board of Directors Issues Statement on Developer Harassment

PSA: Watch PAX 2014 on Twitch

Video game streaming service Twitch will be hosting a number of streams and original programming from PAX 2014 in Seattle, Washington beginning today and running until the shows end on Sunday. The Twitch booth at PAX 2014 will broadcast a variety of content including game reveals, exclusive gameplay, developer interviews, and "mini" eSports events, such as the TeSPA Collegiate Hearthstone Open, and Capcom Pro Tour.

Puppy Games Launches Patreon for MMO 'Battledroid'

Puppy Games has launched a Patreon to fund the ongoing development of its free MMO Battledroid. While the small indie studio continues to work on it, it has come to the conclusion that the MMO needs at least another year of development time and it does not have enough money to fund that effort. So they decided to turn to Patreon instead of other crowdfunding methods like Indiegogo or Kickstarter to raise some funds.
