FCC Hits Pause Button on AT&T-DirecTV and Comcast-TWC Merger Reviews

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officially hit the pause buttons on its review of both the Comcast/Time Warner Cable and AT&T/DirecTV mergers. Normally the FCC operates its review under a "180-day informal time clock," but requests for an extensions from multiple companies has forced the agency to extend the normal approval process period.

Microsoft Offers 'Xbox One Game Voice Commander' For Free

Former EA CEO John Riccitiello Takes Top Post at Unity

In a letter to the Unity game development community today, current CEO David Helgason announced that he was resigning and that former EA CEO John Riccitiello would be taking his place. Riccitiello left EA in March of 2013 and joined the Unity board of directors in November 2013. Helgason will remain at Unity, but as its executive vice president in charge of strategy and communications.

NSA CTO Cannot Moonlight for Private Security Firm

It turns out that it's not cool for the National Security Agency (NSA) chief technology officer Patrick Dowd to work "up to 20 hours a week" for IronNet, a private consulting firm founded and run by former NSA chief Keith Alexander. An internal review of this situation was recently undertaken by the NSA and the agency decided that it simply was not a good idea.

Alexander acknowledged that there are issues (we assume a conflict of interest) with allowing the arrangement to continue as well.

Microsoft Reveals HaloFest Event

Microsoft and 343 Industries are inviting fans to a celebration of all things Halo as they broadcast special sneak peeks, interviews and exclusive gameplay to the world on Xbox Live, Xbox.com and Twitch. This event is to get fans amped up for the Nov. 11 release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo: Nightfall. Microsoft will broadcast its HaloFest 2014 celebration from the Avalon Theatre in Los Angeles on Nov. 10 beginning at 8 p.m. - the day before Halo: The Master Chief Collection arrives worldwide.

Microsoft CEO Says There's No Pay Gap at Company

Backpedaling a bit after recent comments about the pay gap between men and women in the tech industry, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella now says there is no pay gap between men and women at Microsoft. In an interview with CNBC, Nadella said that there is only around a .5 percent difference in salaries on a global basis within the company.

"So it's different than what perhaps is sort of normally felt across all industries," Nadella said.

Judge Rules That EA's Confidence in 'Battlefield 4' Does Not Equate to Securities Fraud

A U.S. District Court has ruled that Electronic Arts cannot be held liable for securities fraud for being confident about the launch of Battlefield 4. Last year two plaintiffs representing a class of investors sued EA for making "false and misleading assurances" to investors that its latest game in the Battlefield series was ready for launch.

Actor Sues 'The Simpsons' Maker For Infringing on His 'Goodfellas' Character

Mike Maulbeck Resigns From Code Avarice

October 21, 2014

Developer Mike Maulbeck, one of the guys behind Paranautical Activity, has announced his resignation from indie studio Code Avarice. For a short time yesterday, Paranautical Activity was available on Steam, but appeared as an Early Access title - even though the game had just come out of its early access phase of development. When the game was listed as "early access" on the front page of the Steam Store, Mualbeck got upset on Twitter and threatened to kill Valve founder Gabe Newell.

Valve pulled the game after learning about the tweets.

London Mayor Slams UK TTIP Protestors

London Mayor Boris Johnson has called those critical of the US-EU trade deal (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) "numskulls" and "left-wingers." In his regular column in The Telegraph, Johnson described the protest in the UK over TTIP as spreading panic and fear. His focus is mainly on critics of the trade agreement that are worried about the "irreversible privatization" of England's national healthcare system.
