The Saucy Night-Life of San Francisco Targets GDC Attendees

March 2, 2015

We all get that sex sells, but there's a reason that parties involving strippers and other male-focused titillation might be looked down upon in this day and age. After all it's no longer the 1990s and people expect party organizers to show some sensitivity to the growing number of women that attend game industry trade events like the Game Developers Conference.

HBO's 'Looking' Highlights 'GaymerX,' 'Gaming in Color,' and MidBoss Games

March 2, 2015

In episode 8 of HBO's "Looking," the majority of the episode takes place during the LGBQT gaming event GaymerX3, and co-organizer Matt Conn (who is also the co-founder of MidBoss Games and a developer on the LGBQT-friendly cyber punk adventure game Read Only Memories) even gets a cameo.

Speaking to Conn (who is currently at GDC promoting his game) briefly via IM, I learned some of the lengths that producers went to to make this game-focused episode of the show as authentic as possible.

Senate Panel Greenlights Former Google Exec As Director of the USPTO

February 27, 2015

Yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously voted to approve the appointment of former Google patent chief Michelle Lee to the position of director at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). She still needs the approval of the full Senate.

While previous directors have come from the tech sector (David Kappos was a top lawyer at IBM before taking the position), Lee is an interesting pick because of her strong and very public stance against patent trolls and her work at an Internet-focused company.

MonteThough from a business side, i would agree with the article. While it would be smarter for developers to slow down, you can't expect EA, Activision or ubisoft to do something like that. Nintnedo's gotta get the third party back.02/28/2015 - 4:36pm
MonteThough it does also help that nintendo's more colorful style is a lot less reliant on graphics than more realistic games. Wind Waker is over 10 years old and still looks good for its age.02/28/2015 - 4:33pm
MonteWith the Wii, nintnedo had the right idea. Hold back on shiny graphics and focus on the gameplay experience. Unfortunatly everyone else keeps pushing for newer graphics and it matters less and less each generation. I can barely notice the difference02/28/2015 - 4:29pm
MonteON third party developers; i kinda think they should slow down to nintendo's pace. They bemoan the rising costs of AAA gaming, but then constantly push for the best graphics which is makes up a lot of those costs. Be easier to afford if they held back02/28/2015 - 4:27pm
