'Crowfall' Surpasses Funding Goal

Within three days of launching on Kickstarter, Crowfall has already reached its goal, generating more than $851,732 (as of this writing) in pledges. ArtCraft was looking to raise $800,000.

Crowfall Crowd Funding Campaign Launches

The crowd-funding Kickstarter campaign for recently revealed massively-multiplayer online game Crowfall has launched today. The game, which has a PvP focus, uses procedurally generated server-sized worlds that die over time, according to developer ArtCraft Entertainment. Players, thankfully, live forever and after the world they fought in days they return home to the Eternal Kingdom with their prizes and treasure to prepare for another battle within a brand new realm.

'The Elder Scrolls Online' Adding 'Convenience and Vanity Items' To Online Store

The Elder Scrolls Online developer Zenimax Online Studios revealed that it will soon allow players to buy what it calls "convenience items" in the PC version of its MMO. Those convenience items include health, stamina, magic and experience boost potions that you can buy using real-world money through the game's Crown Store. You'll also be able to buy customization items, upgraded mounts, vanity pets, costumes, etc.

None of these items will affect TESO's core gameplay, Zenimax claims.

'PlanetSide 2' Community Secures Guinness World Record

The PlanetSide 2 community has successfully broken the Guinness World Record for the largest online battle involving more than 1,000 players. The record-breaking event, which took place last week, was organized by PlanetSide community group PlanetSide Battles. Over 1,158 players participated in the event in Sony Online Entertainment's MMO shooter, securing the "Most Players Online in an FPS Battle."

The previous record, 999 players in one online battle, was held by a browser-based game called Man vs. Machine.

'The Elder Scrolls Online' Coming to PS4 and Xbox One This Summer, Game Going Free-To-Play

Elder Scrolls Online will be going free-to-play later this year and it will be coming to both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 too. Zenimax Online announced that its MMO based on the popular Elder Scrolls series of role-playing games will be released on June 9 for Xbox One and PS4. And with it coming to next-gen consoles the company also revealed that the game will be free-to-play, meaning no subscription fees. To play all you'll need to do is buy it for your favorite platform.

Jagex Shutting Down 'Transformers Universe' in January

RuneScape maker Jagex announced today that it is shutting down Transformers Universe, the company's MMO based on the popular Transformers franchise from Hasbro. The UK-based MMO developer proposed downsizing its team last month, noting that the free-to-play MMO game was reaching a "new stage of development in its life cycle."

But it turns out that the company decided that the game wasn't performing well enough to continue supporting it.

North American Operations Lower Perfect World Entertainment Profits

China-based Perfect World Entertainment reported a decline in profits for the third quarter, citing poorly performing North American properties. During the three-month period ended September 30, 2014, Perfect World earned ¥974 billion ($158.7 million) in revenue, up by around 5 percent compared to the same period a year ago. The five percent growth was attributed to the ongoing success of DOTA2 in China, which the company operates for Valve and the successful launch of mobile games CrossGate Mobile and Forsaken World.

'Final Fantasy XIV' Servers Targeted by Ongoing DDoS Attacks

Square Enix issued an advisory warning to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn players that they may experience intermittent connection issues due to an ongoing DDoS attack on the game's servers. While the attacks, which have apparently been ongoing for several days, are causing login difficulties for players, Square Enix says both personal customer information and character data "are not in danger of being exposed."

Trion Worlds Targeted by DDoS Attack

Over the weekend MMO maker Trion Worlds found itself targeted by a DDoS attack by an unknown party, affecting all of its games - including ArcheAge, RIFT, Defiance, and Trove.

According to TenTon Hammer the attacks started on Sept. 13. Trion Worlds' Twitter account indicated in its last update - which was on Sept. 13, noted that its services were still under attack:

Layoffs Hit ZeniMax Online

ZeniMax Online has laid off an undisclosed number of employees who were working on The Elder Scrolls Online, the company's MMO based loosely on the popular role-playing game series that includes such games as Oblivion and Skyrim.

While the layoffs were confirmed by Peter Hines, vice president of PR and marketing at Bethesda Softworks, the company did not disclose how many employees were let go, and whether those employees were full-time, part-time, or contractors.

EA Shutting Down 'Ultima Forever' by the End of August

Electronic Arts is shutting down Ultima Forever, the multiplayer role-playing game for iOS devices. EA made the announcement on the official Ultima Forever forums. The game was billed as a spiritual successor to Ultima IV, but being a mobile title EA added micro-transactions into the mix. The online services will shut down on August 29.

The Elder Scrolls Online Gold Duping Bug Revealed

According to a Reddit thread, an exploit in The Elder Scrolls Online allows players to farm unlimited sums of gold. Developer ZeniMax Online Studios has already stepped in to prevent further use of the bug, it's unclear just how much the exploit has thrown off the in-game economy and what can be done to roll back the damage. A similar situation happened with the Diablo III Auction House, which caused trillions in virtual currency to flood the in-game economy.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Has Two Million Registered User Accounts

According to a report on Gematsu, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has registered more than 2 million player accounts. The new number is being attributed to the MMORPG being released on the PS4 this week. Square announced in 2013 that PS3 players would gain full access to the PS4 version at no additional cost.

The revamped title launched last August on PC and PS3, following a beta that garnered more than 1 million sign-ups.

SOE Details All Access Subscriber Benefits to EverQuest II Players

Sony Online Entertainment passed along a note explaining how EverQuest II players will benefit from an SOE All Access membership when it officially launches next week.

Some of the special benefits EverQuest II players will see in the game starting next week includes seven character slots, a "Member Benefits buff" that provides an additional 15 percent coin loot and 10 percent mount speed, double the alternate currencies earned in game, "members-only" Loyalty items and "all access" to broker, in-game mail, chat and spell tiers.

SOE: 'Landmark Player Studio' Support Launching in May

Funcom Q4 Revenues Down Thanks to Poor 'Secret World' Performance

Funcom reported less-than-stellar revenues for the fourth quarter of 2013, citing a drop in the performance of its MMO, The Secret World. In the quarter that ended December 31, 2013 Funcom reported $4.3 million in revenue, down from the $7.8 million it generated in the same period a year earlier. Funcom's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) were $233,000, down from $2 million the prior year. The company also reported a $4.2 million impairment on The Secret World and its underlying technology due to a decrease in its projected revenue.

According to the report, staff were sent home today as Norwegian authorities collected documents related to an investigation into insider trading, though specific details about the investigation remain unknown as of this writing. Funcom's stock has also been temporarily frozen on the Oslo stock market.
