Indie game developer Notion Games announced via Twitter that it will change the name of its game, Super Ubi Land, following concerns expressed by Ubisoft over potential confusion and possible brand infringement. Super Ubi Land has no connection to Ubisoft, obviously.

The game was announced in January and successfully raised $6,333 from nearly 300 backers in February on Kickstarter.

The game is being developed for Wii U, Windows PC, Mac and Linux for release later this year.

Responding to the widespread reporting that the "Nyan Cat" creator and "Keyboard Cat" creator sued Warner Bros. over the inclusion of the Internet memes in the game Scribblenauts Unlimited, Christopher "Nyan" Orlando Torres said that he tried to talk to Warner Bros. about the issue but was disrespected on multiple occasions.

Warner Bros. Interactive is no stranger to the fighting battles about trademarks and copyrights in courts, but a case filed by two Internet meme creators has the industry giant in a role reversal. According to this NeoGAF thread Charles "Keyboard" Schmidt (Keyboard Cat meme) and Christopher "Nyan" Orlando Torres (Nyan Cat meme) filed a lawsuit against publisher Warner Bros.

Tim Langdell and Edge Games, Inc. have lost a bid to retain the rights to the "Edge" trademark, thanks to a ruling by a Californian Court. The court sided with Electronic Arts, who Langdell and his company sued (among many others) for using the word "edge" in its game Mirror's Edge.

When Apple applied for a trademark for the smaller sized iPad last year, the US Patent and Trademark Office replied to its request by saying that the description for it was not enough to warrant approval because it would be covered under what it already holds for the iPad.

Update: Sunstone Games owner Simon Strange told GamePolitics this afternoon that legal counsel for Wizards of the Coast contacted him way back in December of last year to complain that "Kaiju Combat" was an infringement of its trademark "KAIJUDO."

Apple should probably get ready for a lawsuit or a settlement agreement in Brazil. Brazil’s patent authority announced on Wednesday that Apple does not own the iPhone name in Brazil. That distinction belongs to a local company called Gradiente SA. While this ruling from the agency doesn't mean that Apple can't use the name for its products in the region, it does mean that Apple may have a court fight on its hands somewhere down the road.

The Electronic Freedom Foundation announced that it will fight for Reddit's 'Gaymer community' and against Chris Vizzini, owner of Gaymer.org. Vizzini holds a trademark on the term, but top moderators from the Subreddit /r/gaymers and the EFF believe that the trademark is invalid.

Former THQ executive vice president of core games Danny Bilson laments the dismantling and sale of THQ and its various properties and studios. Eurogamer reports that actor Jerry Lambert has settled a lawsuit with Sony over his part in a Bridgestone ad where he played an engineer playing a Wii video game. In 2012 Sony sued Bridgestone and the actor because they claimed that Lambert's engineer character in the ad was too much like its popular fictitious PS3 spokesperson Kevin Butler.

The War Z has not had the best PR in the last week or so, and things are not getting any better for the post-apocalyptic zombie survival action game. Apparently, even as Hammerpoint Interactive released the game and then had it pulled from Steam, the company behind it had lost its trademark for the game..

Over the last two years, 41-year-old father-of-one Justin Success-Brooks (pictured) had been selling counterfeit DS and DSi games through his 18 homemade websites netting himself a cool £600,000.  The estimated retail value of the thousands of games he sold is around £12 million.

Last Friday, he was sentenced to 32 months in jail.

The judge hearing Apple's lawsuit against Amazon for having an "appstore" has expressed some strong skepticism in Apple's core arguments. Today in an Oakland federal court US District Judge Phyllis Hamilton expressed strong doubt that Apple will be able to prove its case that consumers are confused or deceived by Amazon's use of the word "Appstore." This is not a new view by Judge Hamilton, who said pretty much the same thing a year ago after hearing Apple's arguments and denied a request by the company for a preliminary injunction against Amazon.

Amazon.com has asked California U.S. District Court judge to dismiss Apple's claim that the online retailer's use of the term "appstore" is a case of false advertising. The request is in response to an Apple lawsuit filed in March 2011 that alleged that that Amazon.com's use of the name "Amazon Appstore" violated its App Store trademark. In November of last year Apple amended the complaint to include allegations that the use of "appstore" amounted to false advertising and would cause consumer confusion.

A report from Holland (uncovered by IT World Canada) reveals that the Dutch government plans to fight a proposed Canadian-European trade treaty because it contains language similar to what had been rejected earlier this year when the European Parliament voted down the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

Last night the organizers of GaymerCon hosted a Google + Hangout to discuss the fight between Reddit's r/Gaymers sub-reddit and Gaymer.org owner Chris Vizzini (details on that here). At dispute is use of the term "gaymer," which Vizzini secured a trademark for in 2007. Concerned with the action, the group discussed the issue and answered the community's questions in the live video chat last night.

Hot on the heels of yesterday's story that Stardock was suing its ex-marketing manager over Elemental: War of Magic, we learn that the company is now the target of another lawsuit involving a UK developer.

According to this Computer World Australia report, Australian Greens Senator Scott Ludlam has some harsh words for the Australian federal government for its part in pushing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which is currently in negotiations in the U.S. The treaty is an agreement between Pacific Rim countries such as Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and the U.S.

A federal judge has denied a motion by Electronic Arts to dismiss counter-claims in a trademark lawsuit filed by Textron Innovations and Bell Helicopter Textron related to helicopters depicted in its popular Battlefield games. Textron Innovations and Bell Helicopter Textron make the AH-1Z, UH-1Y and V-22 helicopters. They filed a lawsuit in 2008 claiming that the game's depiction of these helicopters infringed on Bell-manufactured vehicles in the "Battlefield Vietnam," "Battlefield Vietnam: Redux" and "Battlefield 2" video games.

Blizzard Entertainment issued a brief statement this afternoon announcing that it had come to a mutual agreement concerning their competing DOTA games. Valve is developing DOTA 2, but under the terms of the agreement Blizzard will preserve its right to the noncommercial use of DOTA for its community relating to player-created maps for Warcraft III and StarCraft II.

Chinese company Shenzhen Proview Technology said today that it plans to enforce its "iPad" trademark in the country further by asking customs officials to ban imports and exports of Apple’s most popular device. With all of Apple's iPad devices being manufactured in the country (through Foxconn) this could prove to be a serious threat to its business, because the Proview has already found success on the local level with getting the iPad removed in one unnamed city, according to an Associated Press story.

Blizzard has challenged Valve's efforts to secure a U.S. trademark on Defense of the Ancients - something it said it had no plans of doing. In 2011 Valve announced plans to create a sequel to the popular Warcraft II mod, Defense of the Ancients. At the time Blizzard said that it would not oppose the company, but said that it was confused by the move. Today we learn that Blizzard filed a complaint with the U.S. trademark in opposition of Valve's registration of the Dota name in late 2011.

According to this Ars Technica report, Apple has allied itself with a known patent troll to take out its enemies. The company has had some covert dealings with Digitude Innovations, a company that enjoys being paid in patents so it can beat the hell out of companies in court.

While Apple managed to get a number of preliminary injunctions against Samsung in other countries in their ongoing battle of trademark disputes related to iOS devices, it looks like the US courts aren't playing ball. US District Judge Judy Koh has denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction that would have barred Samsung from selling its Galaxy brand tablets and smartphones on Friday. While thing could go Apple's way eventually after a full trial, the decision allows Samsung to continue to sell its Android-based devices without interference from the courts or Apple.

In an interview that took place at BlizzCon over the weekend, Blizzard President Mike Morhaime reiterated to Eurogamer his company's stance on Valve Software’s attempts to trademark the term "DOTA." Valve has made a move to try and trademark the name of the wildly popular Warcraft 3 modification, much to the chagrin of several companies - including Blizzard Entertainment and League Legends maker Riot Games - as well as the DOTA community at large.

Minecraft developer Mojang has 2on the very first round in its legal fight with Bethesda and parent company Zenimax over use of the name "scrolls" in its upcoming game. Lawyers for Zenimax asked a Swedish court to put a temporary injunction on Mojang that would have prevented them from using the name while the case is being sorted out.

Ubisoft is facing a trademark complaint filed by a rock band that just happens to have the same name as one of its upcoming products. The claim has forced the company to delay the game in question in Europe and defend itself in court. The French publisher announced this morning that its music game Rocksmith won't be released in Europe until sometime in 2012, citing "music licensing" and "other external factors" as the causes.
